Moving to a new house with 2 cats – advice needed

Hello everyone. I’m in a very tough spot right now because I will have to move from Chiba to Fukuoka and the moving services will already cost me a small fortune. For now I’ve been a researcher and the savings I have are not that high. The new research position I found unfortunately does not help with relocation fees and this is all on me.

The worst thing tho is the initial deposit of the houses. I’ve been looking and all agencies tell me the same thing – if you have cats, you will pay 2 months deposit and it will be around 500,000¥ total initially. My current house only charged me half of that even though I already had my cats, the agent was kind enough to negotiate the fees for me but the Fukuoka agencies so far were not able to make any negotiations with the manager. They are only showing me the most expensive houses because they say these are the only ones that accept 2 cats. I’m talking to 4 agencies and I don’t feel any difference at all. Every time I ask about the cheaper houses, they say only one cat accepted. I want to ask, is there anything left for me to do at this point, any suggestions at all to try to reduce the coat load? If I say I have one cat in the houses that accept one cat, what could be the outcomes if I bring my other cat later? Any advice is appreciated. Thank you.

  1. Don’t lie about the pets. In worst case they will evict you if found out. Also not worth the mental stress always feeling in danger of being found out. You could ask for the pet and probably deposit fee to be paid monthly splitter up. That is what my agent offered back then.

  2. Join facebook groups in Fukuoka and ask there. It should be possible to find housing there without an estate agent who is willing to let you stay with your cats. Also I dont know about Fukuoka but like in Kyoto there is an international community center with a message board where people put up notices for housing. Good luck.

  3. One pet deposit per animal is pretty standard, unfortunately. But surely there are places that rent for less than 250,000 a month.

Are you looking for detached homes in city center?

I have had limited success asking 1 pet landlords if they will accept a second pet for another month of deposit.

  4. Unfortunately cats are even less accepted than dogs due to their scratching ability. I don’t know if it helps but (i have a large dog) found our current home through a smaller local agency, the house was listed as no pets but after asking directly to the owner he said no problem. So maybe you could try that route, I didn’t pay any deposit.
