Permit for part time work?

Hi. I have a student visa and I was wondering if I wanted to apply for a part time job (baito), what are the steps I would have to do to get the permit? Also do I have to pay income tax on part time income? Thanks in advance.

  1. >what are the steps

Submit the form at immigration. That’s the only step and they’ll give you a stamp on the back of your residence card. You don’t need to have a current job or job offer to submit the form, you can leave that blank.

    >do I have to pay tax?

Yes of course you do. If you make enough. Any amount over 200,000 in a year will need to be reported. You should file a tax return every year anyways, as if you don’t report a low or zero income your health insurance costs will increase.

Also you need to be aware that there are some places you cannot work. Anything that is considered 水商売 (mizushoubai), 風俗営業 (fuuzokueigyou), or “night work” is off limits. Even as staff. You also cannot work in bars or places who do not operate on a restaurant license. Game centers, arcades etc are also not allowed as it is considered gambling.

  2. I think another user answered your questions. As an additional warning, keep in mind that you are only permitted to work up until 28 hours per week.

I’m assuming you go to a Japanese university or maybe a 日本語学校. They usually have a consult section where they can clear out your doubts. They also usually have some recommendations on what to try as a part time job, and if you’re lucky they might even have some offers themselves. In my school they usually had these exam monitor positions which where a piece of cake and for good money. I remember it was like 1万円 for like 3 hours of you just walking back an forth in a room full of people who were taking an entrance exam where you had to make sure nobody cheated.
