Pension contributions – exemption – help needed

Hi everyone

Thank you for all the continued posts and insights into living in Japan, it’s been very helpful.

When I completed my registration at the local city hall, I filed a pension contribution exemption as I’m only contracted to be in Japan for 1 year.

I was told that I can be exempt however I have to reapply for another exemption in July.

Today I received pension payment slips in my mailbox, is this normal?

If I’m exempt I’d assume I don’t need to pay them?

Or have they messed up my exemption and I’m expected to pay?

I would go to city hall and ask but no English speaking staff work in city hall and my English speaking friend is not here to help me

Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks

L

  1. You should be fine, the exemption should have gone through. Usually what happems is that the payforms would have been sent out/scheduled to be sent out before you applied for the excemption. I’ve had to do this before, and they said you can throw those out. If you’re really unsure, keep those payforms on hand until you receive the postcard from the pension services confirming your excemption just in case. but yeah you should be fine
