Gifu is nice. I stayed on a farm in saitama and it was ok… but yeah the light pollution from Tokyo is kinda hard to avoid

you can use this to find the less bright areas. if you really want a dark sky, the closest is Aogashima and it’s technically part of Tokyo but so are the Ogasawara islands which is not close at all.
You’ll have to travel a long ways to find dark areas. If you’ve got a car, drive deep into the mountains somewhere far away from any cities and you’ll probably have some decent stargazing. Best to leave Kanto though.
Two words of warning though. Mountains are cold and will soon be snowed it. Take proper precaution.
Also the bears aren’t hibernating yet and will be very active foraging for food before winter. Good luck.
