Question about roomates and deposit return

Hi all, if this is the wrong place for this question I’m very sorry – I did search previous posts and Google but couldn’t find an answer.

I shared an apartment with 1 other person (both of us working full time) and we moved out a while ago. I have been ignored for months by my ex-roomate regarding refund of deposit (he was the main signee and I sent him all reikin/shikikin for him to send on our behalf) before finally being told to contact them myself as he ‘doesn’t care about the money’.

I called and the agency confirmed the money was refunded months ago. They are sending an invoice copy to me and a proof of payment (hopefully). I also have a copy of the contract with my name clearly signed, as well as my roomates’.

My question is where can I go from here? Is there anything I can actually do to chase my money back? It’s not a huge amount but not an amount I’m willing to let go.

Sorry if this is long-winded. I tried to keep it short but hopefully I didn’t leave out any important details.

TL;DR Ex-roomate lied about deposit refund (mine and his portion) but now I have proof it’s a lie – what steps can I take from here?

  1. You can sue him but the time/money it takes to do that may outweigh whatever 1/2 of the deposit would have been.

So if you’re not willing to let it go, you need to go get yourself a lawyer. Otherwise there’s not much else you can do.. Legally at least..
