Currently an ALT who’s been roped into coaching basketball at my school. Now, on a technical level, I know it, but on a practical level, it’s been a while since I last played, and as such, I am looking for a place where I can do some solo practice to sharpen up my own skills a bit.
I’m trying to find somewhere that I can attend on a decently regular basis. There are some outdoor courts but those are pretty crap with low hoops and a sand/gravel layer on the court and as far as I can read, the local community gym is groups reservations only. Does anybody have any ideas as to what I could do?

I am in same boat as you are. I am in Shinagawa ku.
Willing to travel to play. Let me know if you find any good place.
Tried to contact meetups and local group through google/line but either they were dead group or no responses.
Tokyo basketball or Tokyo Gaijin basketball in Meetup/instagram is a good start.
Japanese people tend to gatekeep a lot for their sport groups especislly against men and even the gatekeepers have gatekeepers.
If you need help with training, I actually am interesting in basketball training. Message me if interested!
In terms of court locations, have u tried the one near Kira-toda station in Saitama? Super close to kita-ku Tokyo, and seemingly got a decent court. I might give it a shot at some point
Tokyo Gaijin is the best run, I’ve tried multiple other Meetup groups and they are mostly trash (wasting time doing drills, too many people, people who have never played before)

As for the community centers, they are usually reservation only… however they usually have at least 1 ‘open night’ for each sport a week. I’ve been to a few different ones and mostly it’s just high-school kids hanging out. But if you just want to shoot around on your own it’s not a bad option
This is a good website to find games in my experience https://www.net-menber.com/. Also jimoty
