PR approved today, AMA

A little context:

I applied via the HSP route (1 year route) and got my application approved in 4 months. I did hire lawyers to help with my application.

  1. Four months is amazing! I am on a spouse visa and applied in November last year. They justttt asked for more paperwork to submit this month 😭 so long!

    Jealous!!

  2. Omg, I’m so jealous. Applied 5 months ago here with my wife, HSP + spouse route, but nothing yet.

  3. Congrats 👏
Are you getting either of the new Spider-Man or Mario games this weekend?
    Which would you go for?
    I really can’t decide.

  4. Cool! I’m applying next year. Do you think my application would go smoothly? I have 10 points that come from changing jobs and 70 prior. does a year after the job change count as having 80 points for a year?

  5. How long did it take from first contact with a lawyer until submitting the application?

Did you contact the lawyer in advance before completing 1 year with HSP points?

  6. Congratulations! Could you shed some light on what the tax implications are for PR, compared to a working visa? I would have enough points to start the application early next year, but was under the impression that it’s beneficial to switch status closer to the expiration of my current visa. Is this information incorrect?

This also depends a lot on the homecountry of the applicant so totally okay if you don’t have much to share!

  7. Congratulations, I submitted mine 3 months ago. If it’s like yours, 1 month to go. But mines from a spousal visa

  8. Posts like this make me regret living in Tokyo. But only slightly. I’m nearly 7 months in on the wait.

  9. Four months, wow. I have the required points but feel pretty overwhelmed. Not sure where to start and what order or priority to go about it. I would hire a lawyer but not for over 10man en.

  10. Japanlife and its admins might be the most hateful and entitled people on the whole reddit and it’s saying something. I can’t believe some things i read here.

Congratulations on your pr big man. Hope i can get it one day as well

  11. Congrats, I just hit the 6month mark on waiting for mine (Tokyo), how are you going to celebrate?

  12. Good for you, I’m glad it all worked out. I’m trying to get my PR as well. Actually struggling with it a bit. Been in Japan for 11 years and get only a single year renewal every year.

I hired a lawyer this year who told me I’d need a 3-5 year visa to apply for PR. Said he’d help me to get that extension first…but failed completely and only got me another 1 year. I don’t know if he’s right and the system just likes to screw with me, or if he’s just a Japanese Lionel Hutz.

I figure I’ll give it one more big push. But if I don’t get something within the next 2 years or so, I may need to seriously reconsider my life here…

Quick & dirty facts: 39 y/o male, American passport, Caucasian for what it matters, decent income, professor visa working as an independent adjunct for the past 8 years.

  13. Also got mine the same route (80+ points) almost a year ago. Only needed about a day off from work for the paperwork and submitting the application, with no requests for additional documentation.

But maybe you make more than $2,500 a day.

  14. > I did hire lawyers to help with my application.

    I never knew about this

How much was it? And would you recommend them?

  15. What is HSP?

I’ve been in Japan for over ten years and only this year got a 3 year visa… Getting a permanent residency after a single year…. I’ve never heard of such a thing?

  16. Congratulations! After they sent you a notification that says your application is approved, is there a time limit on how quickly you need to go to immigration to pick up your visa?
