Spending 14 days in Japan and I am on the tail end of my trip. I’m from California, United States. And wow. Even the cheap grocery stores have sushi that rival price places back home. Just a wonderful experience!

There’s actually good sushi sold in Japanese grocery stores in San Diego CA too. I get sushi at Mitsuwa and Nijiya grocery stores here. There are several Japanese grocery stores in Los Angeles CA too, I’ve been to ones in Little Tokyo. I can’t remember the names but there’s good sushi sold there too
I got a nigiri set from a supermarket in Kyoto which was enough to be a meal on its own. It cost about 700 yen which is roughly $4.70. It was better than some of the sushi restaurants I went to in Japan.
That is far better than Trader Joe’s sushi
