Question regarding wealth distribution and cost of living in Japan

Greetings!
I’m a student from India. A Japanese company (whose name I can’t take) has come to our college for campus job placements and is offering an annual salary of ¥7,920,000 (monthly salary of ¥550,000).
I wanted to know if I’ll be able live comfortably with the above sum. I was also curious regarding what percent of people earn above/below this figure in Japan and especially in Tokyo. Thanks a lot for your answers in advance 🙂

PS: I did try googling and found the exchange rate and stuff. By Indian standard, I know this is quite a lot and I am greatful for it but I have always heard that the cost of living in Japan is very high as compared to India and thus I am asking this question here so as to get it straight from the horse’s mouth itself.

  2. That is slightly higher than the average income for the 23 wards which is the wealthiest part of the nation.

You should be fine, you just won’t be able to afford to hang out with the expat and embassy crowds.

  3. I don’t know what your standard of living is but for most people you’d be able to live comfortably.

Also I feel compelled to clarify but are they offering **a yearly salary of 7.9m** or **upwards 7.9m** if they give you a wide range they could very well low ball you on that range.

For example, i was in a round of job interviews for a large Japanese international company. The position they were interviewing me for paid 9.5m – 12.5m that was the range that the HR representative gave me in the initial screening. After 4 rounds of interview(their evaluation) it was determined that my salary would be the lower end of that range with no room for immediate renegotiation but opportunity for salary renegotiation after probation.

The reason why I asked the question above, is don’t underestimate companies here doing a bait and switch on salary offers. Now I admit, that maybe my skills and qualifications did not qualify me for the higher end of the scale, but my point is that it’s just a cautionary tale. All they or you need to say is:

    1) this is a good opportunity

    2) you won’t find much better at your level

    3) you’ve already made it so far in our interview process and we think you are an excellent fit for the company.

For self serving purposes, I ended up taking a job at an MNC (multinational company) for a salary beyond the range that that company provided..

  4. I live on *less than half* of that monthly figure comfortably.

Oh how I would kill to have 550k monthly pay…

  5. More than money I think you need to worry about the language barrier here. If you don’t speak Japanese adjusting here is quite difficult. As one Indian in Japan to another, if you get any other English speaking country go for that. Also wouldn’t recommend starting career here. Progression is slower than US
