  1. Reading the first volume of よつばと one chapter at a time, feeling pretty alright. Takes me about one hour to go through a chapter, and I understand something like 80 – 95%. Especially well when it’s just Yotsuba talking. Now when her dad and Jambo talk, that’s tougher.

I don’t know what this says about my Japanese comprehension skills, but it should be at least an okay n5?

  2. Maybe you won’t count it as a victory but at least for me it is: Since recently I am finally fell like I’m getting better at listening.

If I remember just half a year back and I tried to listen to Japanese podcasts for learners, etc.. I would maybe understand a few single words here and there; but I couldn’t even think about understanding whole sentences. My brain just couldn’t process the japanese sentence structure so rapidly (even if it was spoken slowly). And even if I knew all vocabulary and grammar points I wouldn’t understand it at all.

But now after doing a lot of listening.. and I don’t know how and when it happened.. my brain seemed to have accustomed itself to the japanese sentence structure and honestly, often I don’t really need to think about it anymore. Contrarily if I start to think too much about it, I start to understand less.

Sure there are still some grammar points and loads and loads of unknown vocabulary I still don’t know but what began as some chaotic words put together that I couldn’t understand at all, finally begins to become logical and understandable and this makes me very happy..
