how do you refer different members of the same family?

i know that in japan it is customary to refer to people by their last names unless close, but how would that work in situations where people have the same last name?

for example, if you are talking to someone and want to ask about their sibling, would you use the sibling’s first name? or if you are talking to multiple members of the family at the same time and want to direct something towards one of them, would you use the first name there? if not, how do you make it clear who you’re talking to / about?

  2. Japanese is great because it has words specifically for this; the words for mom, dad, older sister, younger sister, older brother, younger brother, grandparents etc are different when you mean yours or someone else’s. It’s easier than in English.
