Aerospace Engineering Salaries

Hi all!

I’m likely going to get an offer to join a Japanese aerospace company, and I’m trying to get a handle on what I might expect or ask for in salary and benefits. I’ve got 14 years in the industry and will be relocating from the States. I’m assuming most benefits are standard, but what about salary and relocation? I know the salaries won’t come even close to the states, but I still obviously want to get what I can.

Thanks!

  2. It depends on if you’re going to be senior or principal. A friend of mine working as a senior (8 YOE) is getting roughly 600,000 円/month take home. I think for your experience you can try to negotiate for relocation coverage ($5-8k ish to ship everything) + 13mil円/year.

Reloocation/moving should be covered but be aware American furniture may not fit in Japanese housing na some American appliances may not work (or not work well) with Japanese 50hz 100V power. For example: an American kingsize bed is larger than a Tokyo apartment bedroom or an American toaster or iron will never get fully hot with 50hz power.

Speaking of Tokyo apartments, you need help finding housing/accommodation for the first few months since you haven’t mentioned your Japanese abilities. A helping hand getting settled in should be a benefit. Language tutoring should be priority for you (and your spouse as well exorbitant International school fees for any kids you have).

Typically, senior expats get at least 500,000+ yen settling-in since Japanese housing can come without a range ^{almost ^never ^an ^oven} , refrigerator ^{US ^fridges ^often ^don’t ^work} , drapes, and even light fixtures or heat pumps may be missing.

Even though you’ll be getting a stripped and barely-heated concrete box, at least rent will be half what you’re paying in Seattle.
