Extension of Period of Stay. Need insight.

My visa expires on Jan 09. But my residence card expires in May.

Reason my visa and residence card have different expiry dates is because I changed my residence card status for my new job last May.

All that being said, my question is that, since the status on my visa is different to the one on my RD card, do I have to apply for a a new visa altogether, or am I able to extend it normally only having to explain why my visa and RD card have different statuses?

I havent even lived in Japan a year yet (obviously), so please don’t judge me for not knowing this. I just don’t want it to be a pain in the ass, which it probably will be since this is Japan.

Id appreciate it if anyone could write their past experiences when it comes to visa renewal.

  1. afaik, your visa becomes invalid as soon as you get a residence card. The residence card becomes your visa. So you just renew your residence card normally

  2. The visa is meaningless now. It’s what got you into the country with a status of residence (SoR). That status is represented on your residence card and that’s what you need to extend. Technically you don’t renew your visa, you extend your SoR.

People often use the word “visa” to mean their SoR.
