Has anyone tried asking for document submission extensions for residence status changes?

Hi all,

I recently applied to change my residence status from a student in Japan to a contract worker, but I received a submission deadline for my diploma next month, even though I submitted my certificate of expected graduation previously. I’m assuming it’s because my graduation is VERY close, so they’re expecting the real thing to be submitted soon.

Unfortunately, my university told me that they don’t provide electronic certificates (which aren’t accepted by Immigration anyway), and that the diplomas wouldn’t be printed and shipped out until AFTER my submission deadline.

I was planning on going to the Immigration Bureau to request an extension, and I was wondering whether anyone else had any experience with asking for an extension for a deadline from a 資料提出通知書 that came in the mail? I couldn’t find anything online or on the moj.go.jp website about it.

  1. Not for a residence status change, but during my last visa renewal I had to ask for a two week extension cause I was missing a document from my former workplace I did not know I needed and it was right before Golden Week (hence I asked for two weeks just to be safe). I suppose it might depend on how long of an extension you need but definitely consult with the immigration bureau. Hope it all goes well for you!

  2. Give the school your application number and ask them to contact immigration to explain the situation. Having an explanation directly from the school on why the diploma will be available later than expected is the best option.

  3. I got a request for documents right before a planned trip. I called the person assigned to me case, they told me it was fine and to call them once everything was in the mail.
