My first day at this yakiniku-ya (baito) is supposed to be next week. Unfortunately, my school is organizing an event that I am encouraged to join, and it coincides with my shift.
As an exchange student, of course I’ll be prioritizing school affairs. I just want to know how I can inform the manager about this, as in what should I say. I feel a bit embarrassed that I’ll be asking to move my first day and I’m not even sure if school would be a good enough reason for them. I’m also worried about cultural nuances that I could possibly overlook in this kind of situation.
I’m sorry if it might seem like I’m overthinking it, I just don’t wanna make any bad impressions. Any advice would be appreciated!!

You could just tell them exactly this. It’s all reasonable and polite.

If it’s not, this might not be a good enough job for someone with their priorities clear.

It’s a part time job. Just say you can’t show up that day.
