Good part-time work?

I’m starting to accept that there isn’t much I can do in Japan other than teach English, but I wanted to ask you fine people if you have had any interesting part-time work that wasn’t teaching English

Thanks!

  1. The last part-time job (employed, not freelance) I got was during covid, developing software for research at university. It was remote, too.

  2. Ive worked in restaurants and Im currently working in IT. afaik Uber Eats and similar activites are pretty easy to get into as well.

  3. Back in my days of English teaching I was introduced, via a colleague, to a guy who worked for a media company. Through that, I got some experience in things like checking translations, creating English copy (slogans, phrases, etc: they call it “catch copy” in Japan), and things like that. This was directly useful in getting me into my current line of work, which is based on such things.

You may feel that there might not be many other options for you right now, but if you happen to be in the right place at the right time and meet the right people, you never know where you’ll end up. If you have particular skills in a certain area, never hesitate to leverage them. It may be the difference between landing a job in a different field, and not landing one.

  4. I’ve know foreigners to work night shifts at the conbini. Also Mcdonalds and Burger King hire foreign workers. I knew a French student who worked in a French restaurant, he mainly did cooking but they’d parade him around sometimes and he would woo older ladies with his French accent.

  5. Have you looked at cezars kitchen? They’re often looking for work and it’s usually in English.

  6. I work in French style shop where my boss is making all kind of cookies and cakes. He is Japanese and all job also. I just passed n3 this summer

  7. Conbini is always a good bet even more so if you want to speak Japanese at your part time job! I always see foreigners working in conbini’s in the busy parts of Tokyo (Shibuya, Shunjuku etc)

  8. I was working part time in game localization and it was great. Unfortunately the company cancelled the project 😂 so I’m back to looking as well. And there isn’t much.

Yeah you can work at a conbini and stuff but it’s not particularly “interesting” work in my opinion. I feel like part time workers are very undervalued in this country and most remotely professional or interesting work is typically full time 😅

So I’ll teach English as I keep looking for the next opportunity… it will take time I am sure!

Just don’t give up and keep looking!!

  9. Currently enjoying part time job as a barista, where i get to socialize, practicing my japanese and do what i like which is making coffee and it feel more like fun activity than work.

I’ve had various part-time jobs, and my advice is to choose what aligns with your passion or interest.
If you prefer minimal interaction and simple tasks, consider a night shift at a convenience store. For those with high energy levels, jobs like factory work might be a great fit, but sometimes the environment is bad.

And last whenever the work environment didn’t fit you, just quit. Part-time jobs should be fun!

  10. You’ve recently posted that you were on a working holiday visa.

That narrow led down your options.
