Chinese Student, activity ideas?

Hello everyone!

My junior high school just got a transfer student! It’s super exciting for everyone and he’s a very sweet kid. The one issue is that he doesn’t speak Japanese and only knows the most basic English (yes/no, hello/goodbye etc.)

So, does anyone know of any activities or games for low level students that DO NOT involve the use of Japanese? Or alternatively, any resources for worksheets or any activities made for Mandarin Chinese speakers?

Any other advice for working with an international student?

Thank you in advance!

  1. Many of the ESL resources and games you may have can also be used for your Chinese student. Remember that ESL teachers have to teach students English without knowing their language. So games or activities that need very little explanation will work great. If they’re familiar with the alphabet, you can do bingo, crosswords/word searches (depending on their level), or physical activities also.

  2. I had a Chinese student transfer in junior high and she spoke no Japanese. Her English was way better than anyone else that I had ever taught, but she didn’t understand the Japanese to learn. But since she was so far ahead, I just taught her in English and she was able to use a translator for the instructions.

  3. Twinkl is a good resource, albiet paid. But they have resources for literally everything so they’d probably have something for this.

  4. Oh boy, I’m fortunate that the one Chinese student in my JHS speaks Japanese to the point that I don’t need to speak Chinese with him (although one of the other teachers came up to me and suggested that I should spend some time speaking Chinese to him between classes).
