Has anyone else had problems with SmartEx?

I’ve booked Shinkansen tickets through SmartEx for peace of mind, and the charges came out as normal. Four days later, a third transaction to them happened for about the same price as one of the two transactions, even though there’s nothing on the SmartEx Issue Usage page that points to what this transaction is for. I phoned them up and the conclusion I interpreted was just to wait and the transaction will be reversed, with the time taken depending on the card issuer.

I did read that SmartEx verifies cards by taking a transaction, but not as much as a whole single trip and not this long after a reservation is complete. Am I alone in having this issue?

  1. I had the same thing happen twice with a booking for a APA hotel.

    It takes 10-12 days for the first charge to resolve and be payed back.

    It read it has something to do with an incompatibility between the credit cards systems.

  2. It will be reversed. Its something about exchange rates that change up a little bit and they fix it up later
