A special time of the year for tanuki?

I live in western Tokyo on the Ome line. For family reasons ie. Toddler I don’t often get to cycle in the daytime, so most nights I do a quick 20km 23:00-0:00 ish in Hamura, Fussa, Ome and Akiruno. So I routinely encounter wildlife, foxes, tanuki, and the occasional family of boar. In the last week I have been seeing a lot more tanuki. Tonight was a tanuki party, they were everywhere. I don’t know much about tanuki life styles, is this a special time of year when they are about more? Something about preparing for winter?

  1. Possibly a glut of things they feed on around this time of year (eg, mushrooms, persimmons, and citrus fruits)?
