  2. From the NHK article

    > 現地では男が身柄を拘束されているようだということです。

So holy shit, it seems like someone really shot him

  3. Terrorism? And against the former Prime Minister?

This may be the biggest level of political incident in Japan since World War II.

  4. Reported he got shot in the chest.

    >自民党安倍派の関係者によりますと、安倍元総理大臣は、8日午前、奈良県内で街頭演説を行っていたところ、胸を撃たれ、救急車で運ばれたという情報が入っているということです。

Edit: Shot in the back, but he apparently grabbed his chest when he fell.

  5. FORMER PM ABE SHOT IN BREAST AND HOSPITALISED, ATTACKER IN CUSTODY – NHK

    Jesus fucking christ

  6. Shotgun blast at close range and cardiac arrest. Not looking good at all.

  7. Dude, Japan has got to be *the last* place in the world I’d expect to see this sort of thing happen.

Hope Abe will be alright. This is some chilling shit.

  8. This is insane, wow.

Any idea why someone may have done this? (As someone not intimately familiar with how Japanese view Shinzo)

Edit: Some “blue checkmarks” are reporting no vital signs. This is not good. Others are saying the firearm used was a shotgun.

  9. Holy crap. This honestly is horrible news. In Japan of all places and in general it’s VERY rare to see this type of thing in the 2020s as security has significantly improved. I’m in shock. RIP to Mr. Abe

  10. What the actual fuck. NHK reporting he was conscious when leaving the scene, but no vital signs when approaching hospital.

For those not in Japan, NHK World live is doing simultaneous translation of the domestic NHK broadcast, accessible on YouTube.

  11. Oh man, this isn’t going to be good. Assassinations (failed or otherwise) often lead to huge bolstering of the political party that they were a member of. It also leads to heightened security and laws that will potentially restrict personal freedoms. Depending on how the LDP spins this, we could see major impacts for years to come.

  12. I dislike Abe but not enough for any kind of happiness about his death. I wouldn’t celebrate him getting a cough, never mind shot in the back.

That said, I would like to correct a bit of a misconception I’m seeing all over comments regarding this news.

Yes, he’s a retired politician, but he’s also highly regarded as being a puppetmaster for his party. E.g. he didn’t back Kishida for PM, but it’s suspected he backed a female (otherwise completely out of the race) candidate to divide the forward minded voters who would otherwise pick Kishida’s biggest rival, Kono. So it’s not like shooting a retired nobody, this can be expected to have political ramifications.

Once more I’d like to remind people I’m not happy about this.

  13. Wasn’t a fan of his politics but this is a sad day that will leave a serious mark on Japan.

  14. He was totally carried off by his security detail. It’s not a good sign that it’s reported as cardiopulmonary arrest. That is used here to mean deceased.

Abe was still quite influential, even as a retired PM. Thus why he was out giving a speech ahead of the election in a few days.

Here’s hoping that he miraculously pulls through. It’s a sad day in Japan regardless of how one feels about politics.

  15. In Japan, there were several incidents of killing politicians before WW2, but in any case, the society went in the worst direction after the incidents. Terrorism never makes the country a better place.

  16. Fuji TV just reported that the suspect is a former JSDF member. Don’t know if it’s true though.

  17. Does Japan have something equivalent to the Secret Service where even former leaders are protected?

  18. His most recent condition is being reported as “かなり悪い” (incredibly bad) from a source via NHK.

  19. Kishida has now DEFINITELY started his press conference because I’m watching it and I don’t believe this is a fever dream

  20. Sympathy to Kishida – he looked on the verge of tears that entire press conference. Can’t be easy fronting this news

  21. Jesus, I was teaching a class and our warm up question was “would you want to be prime minister?” And my students looked at me and said, “did you hear what happened an hour ago?”…

  22. News reporting the shooter is claiming that he wanted to kill Abe for reasons unrelated to political beliefs

Not that you can really take him at face value

  23. I was 10 minutes away from this. Helicopters everywhere. What a weird morning.

  24. It’s scary that there is an election the day after tomorrow and such a horrific incident is going to happen. I did not agree with Abe’s political position, but I sincerely hope he recovers.
