For those who work for private schools, were you expected to stay after school for clubs? I know this is ESID, but I wanna hear your experiences or what you wish you would’ve done at the beginning to set expectations?
(I’ll be an ALT at a non-Tokyo private school)

Your working terms and conditions will probably have you ending work between 4:00 and 4: 30, which means legally they cannot require you to stay later.
I only know about one private school in Tokyo, but the JETs there are definitely not asked or required to work later than their official hours.
If you’re employed at a school that has an English club and they want you to be a coach, either they should be adjusting your hours to make sure that you’re not doing unpaid overtime, or they should be offering you a coaching fee as an addition to your regular monthly salary.
Edit: Seems I misread location. Sorry! Same answer applies.
At ours, you stay until the end of contracted hours (4.15pm) unless someone gives you permission to leave early. One of the English clubs runs until 5pm (twice a week), so while it’s ok for us to leave at 4.15 (the club is led by another teacher), they prefer us to stay to the end of the club. We get a lot of time off during the year because we don’t do desk-warming over breaks, so it’s a pretty small trade-off to keep everyone happy.
