Converting short-term stay visa to work visa

I (M26) & my partner (F25) are moving to Tokyo from the UK at the end of this year. We both have jobs secured – I am in the process of getting a work visa (engineering) and my partner already has an approved COE and landing permit for her job. Due to the 3 month window on my partner’s COE, we have to enter Japan prior to December 25th.

The issue is that I’ve been advised my visa/COE & landing permit won’t be ready by this date but dont want to leave my partner to arrive solo as this is a big move. I plan on entering Japan on a 90day short-term stay visa and then once I receive my approved COE, exiting Japan to travel to a nearby Embassy for example Japanese embassy in Seoul, ROK to get my work visa processed and receive the landing permit to then re-enter Japan on the valid work visa.

Would the above plan work or is this not possible? Really any nearby Embassy would do, just looking to save on travel costs. Feel like I can’t be the first person to have had this issue.

I’ve been told by third party immigration advisor I would need to come back to UK consulate to get visa processed but I am sure I’ve heard of UK nationals receiving the service described above abroad.

Appreciate any advice!

  2. *Japanese embassy in Seoul, ROK to get my work visa processed*

visa run in the old days, but not anymore. [only for resident](https://www.kr.emb-japan.go.jp/itpr_ja/visa_application.html) or unless you have a very solid/unavoidable circumstances, i dont want to go back uk is not valid reason. so check ahead with the embassy there.

another option is try converting/change status with the said COE in Japan,. They may or may not let you but why not try. Normal standard procedure is process that COE for visa at Japanese embassy in your country of resident.

  3. Like the other commenter said, I think you need to apply at the embassy which covers you place of residence. I am in a similar position, trying to get a work visa, but I am only allowed to apply at the London embassy
