Hey there, please feel free to delete if not allowed!
I’ve been living in Japan (Kanagawa) for about 7 years now.
So, I recently got a new phone and SIM.
And, now I have my unlocked refreshed iPhone XR I got with Softbank back in 2019.
I want to give my iPhone XR to my husband who’s currently using an Aquos sense2 with an au SIM card.
I’m pretty sure the phone is locked to the card – but not sure if that matters for the SIM itself.
So my question:
Is there any way to avoid a visit to the shop and simply pop in the au SIM into the iphone and it’s good to go? Or is a shop visit unavoidable?
I saw on their website the bands are all good and match and it’s not a 5G phone so perhaps it’ll be okay, but I hoped to ask to see.
I’m a little nervous to just put it in and it might cause more issues!
Any advice is really appreciated. Thank you in advance!

It should just work
cards aren’t locked to phones or vise versa.
just put the SIM in and see what happens. you won’t damage or risk anything.
Unless the phones are locked to other networks ( not AU) you should be good
you may need to download the AU carrier profile to make calls.
having some wi-fi available might help.good luck!
Take note on the Aqous phone APN setting and set the same thing to the iphone.
Recent au cards require phone to support VoLTE, which you may need to enable on the iPhone by going to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options and tap Enable LTE or Settings > Mobile Data and tap Enable LTE.
You may also have to download + install au LTE profile, as explained here: https://www.au.com/iphone/support/guide/lte/
Otherwise, yeah it should “just work”.
Might work. The SIM for the AQUOS was not designed for iPhone use so can’t guarantee that it would work.
