Mercari Selling Expensive Item.

Hello!

So I was trying to sell my Laptop in mercury for a week, after lowering the price around 90,000 someone who have bene following and commenting since day 1 bought it today. Sent a comment that reads “初めまして、購入させていただきました。短い間ではございますが、よろしくお願いします。” so, this guy looks like a foreigner “judging by his name on his account.” And doesn’t have any transactions on his account. “no buys or sells” is there any chance I’m getting scammed here?

What I’m worried about is, him getting my laptop, scratching it and/or replacing, taking out parts and then opening a dispute to mercari then getting full refund while I lose time, and possibly damage to my laptop. I know in a lot of situations, these kind of platforms defend the buyer, how am I supposed to protect myself?

I described the flaws in description, posted a video of the laptop working with benchmarks and showing scores & performance on the video. I added 20 pictures showing all aspects. Thank you for any help!

  1. Most people put NC/NR on listings. That is no claims and no returns, you are buying it as is. This is a grey area of Mercari where at the beginning it was a C2C flea market and NC/NR was implied for everything. But now that it’s huge, and a lot of professional sellers and retailers who offer warranties are on the platform it’s getting very unclear.

That’s why it’s safer to do what you did and take a bunch of photos and just spam no claim no return on your post. Also to be honest there is not a 100% way to protect your self. There are shady people out there and Mercari tends to side with the buyer unless it’s an outright scam. This is the risk you take by selling private party. The selling price is higher than a hard off but there is additional risk.

  2. I sell often on merukari, have sold some items at pretty high prices (example rtx3070 for 140,000) I’ve never had an issue but I also document the boxing and shipping through video and photos just in case. I also mention all sales and final and items are in as is condition.

My biggest issue with merukari has always been the constant request to lower the price,… resellers looking for a bargain.

  3. Afaik Mercari policy didn’t allow nc/nr postings – if that was actually binding you could sell any broken crap as legit.
Detailed pics and description of all scratches, niggles and video of said and it sounds like you did all that. People swapping out parts etc? You’re overthinking it.
