Naturalization process

I have been thinking about going through the naturalization process. I already have 85 points for the PR or HSP which may or may not be helpful for the naturalization.

I have been working in Japan for five years with good salary. No crime or traffic violation history at all. I don’t have any JLPT but I am fluent.

But, this year I was outside of Japan two times for 90 days + 36 days = 126 days.

Will it be a problem for my naturalization application?

If yes, which path I should follow?

  1. Sounds like a bit of an edge case. Best to call the legal affairs bureau and get an appointment to discuss.

  2. Hello,

90 days consecutively ? or in total ?

It will be bit difficult as it has already crossed the 100 days period.

basically, 90 days or total 100 days above (in one year) would be treated as difficult to process ( comments from my lawyer).

Although there is always a possibility to discuss with houmukyoku.

    All the best !

  3. PR points don’t directly matter but they will be looking at the same things so it can help your case for sure.

Your days outside Japan will be a problem but how much of one is up to the legal affairs bureau to decide. Rule of thumb is anything over 150 total days is out but 126 is quite close to that number so you might get told to try again next year or maybe after a few years. One of the main requirements is living in Japan and being outside Japan that long might be interpreted by them as not really “living in Japan”
