Does this combination of train passes make sense for us?

Hi yall,

I’m not looking for any itinerary planning or anything like that but more of does this combination of train passes make sense for where we’re trying to go. The last time I visited, our transportation costs came out to be more expensive than anticipated when just using a Suica vs buying a tourist pass or train pass.

I’m planning on travelling to the Kansai region with a 3 day 2 night trip to Hiroshima on Dec 6-17. I’m travelling with my parents (5 adults total) so I’m trying to decrease the amount of luggage we have to carry from place to place. When we arrive, we plan on taking a taxi to the hotel for the night (which is near Shin-Osaka station) before departing for Hiroshima the next morning. When we depart Japan, I plan on doing the same; taking a taxi to the airport.

The first three days, we’re planning on going to Hiroshima/Miyajima before returning to Osaka where we’ll have a “home base” accomodation. We’re planning on holding our hotel/AirBnb in Osaka from day 3 to until we leave to store our luggage there while we take a smaller bag to our Kyoto leg.

I was looking at different options for transportation and was thinking about doing the following to get around:

* Buy Kansai-Hiroshima Pass (5-days, 17,000 Yen) this will cover day 1-5 and can bring us from Osaka to Hiroshima (and back) and travel around Osaka for the first few days.
* Buy a Hiroshima Tourist Pass (2-days, 1,500 Yen) cover street cars in Hiroshima. Using this since street cars aren’t covered by the Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass (I think)
* Buy a Kansai Thru Pass (3-days, 5,400 Yen) this will cover day 5-8 and can take us between Kyoto and Nara.

Does this transportation plan make sense? I think after crunching the numbers, purchasing a Kansai-Hiroshima Area pass seems worthwhile, since I believe a round trip ticket from Osaka to Hiroshima comes out to more than the pass itself. There is quite a few overlap between each pass but I feel like it can be avoided since each pass has a time limit.

Thank you in advance!
