   Hey guys so I’ve been researching ways to move to japan since I want to move there in the near future and learn more about the culture and country. The few I’ve found were either volunteering through workaway, working as a teacher, and/or going to school there (language school or uni). Im curious which of these ways is the most beneficial in making friends, seeing the country, and wont put a huge dent in my bank account. If anyone has experience working through workaway or going to a language school I’d appreciate hearing about your experience and which company you used.

2. Which country are you from? Many countries can visit Japan on a 90-day tourist visa. Some countries can do a working holiday which is also a good option.

   Language school is fine but it’s gonna eat up your time and put a huge dent in your bank account if you study more than 6 months.

3. If you do anything in exchange for something, like do some chores in exchange for a place to stay and food, that is considered work and you cannot do it under a tourist visa.

   The easiest is going as a tourist, anything else will require a visa and more commitment. Teaching English will require a work visa, school will require a student visa and while you can apply for a permission to work, you still have to pay tuition.

4. I see elsewhere you said you’re from the US. Do you have a 4 year university degree? With that English teaching is the easiest way. Without that, your options are much more limited as essentially every work visa will require a 4 year degree. So then you’re looking at student visa, which will allow you to work a little, but you’re gonna be losing money. I’m not sure about volunteer programs, but I’m guessing that will be losing money as well. So if you’re going to be losing money anyway, why not just save up more cash beforehand and take a nice long trip on a tourist visa, up to 90 days?

5. I went to Yokohama design college for language studies for 3 months under my tourist visa and I had a good experience. Only if you’re ok having homework & tests daily. The classes are 3 hours a day and I got an apartment 2 minute away. On the weekend, I stay over at my friend’s house in Shibuya. It’s an unforgettable experience as I made friends and enjoyed it very much. Just make sure you have enough savings to cover everything within those times.

7. Be an ALT! You can get in the country and sometimes get your flight paid for! It’s mostly a do nothing go no-where job and all your employees will understand that. There’s almost zero responsibility and anyone who tells you otherwise is an idiot lol.

   The pay is less than a conbini worker but if your intent is just to travel it makes sense!

   You can also go to language school but it’s hella pricey, you can literally study anything in community college for the some price.

   Lastly you can get a tourist visa for a like 90 days?

8. If you are from the US, you can stay for up to 3 months with no visa. If you want to stay longer, get a visa for language school and you can stay for up to 2 years. There are requirements, though.
