Dry skin in winter. Any recommendations?

Hi everyone.

Winter is coming and every year I have trouble with dry skin. Especially hands and feet.

Does anyone have recommendations of creams or lotions that can help and are easily available within Japan?

  1. Neutrogena Intense repair does wonders for me in winter.

    Here’s an Amazon link, but you can find it in most brick and mortar stores too. Price is similar everywhere, around ¥1,300 for the big pack.

  2. Horse oil creams work wonders: ロッシモイストエイド

    They also help burns heal faster, although in purer forms instead of mixed with creams.

    I do feel sorry for the horses, though.

  3. Minon and Curel are famous for sensitive dry skin. Available in most drug stores. They both have series of face wash products, lotions and creams for both face and body, bath lotions, shampoo and conditioners.

  4. I second horse oil recommendations and couldn’t recommend products containing ultra purified Vaseline/petroleum more. They are hypoallergenic magic for preventing trans epidermal water loss in the skin, which is a prime source of dryness. They are purified by-products of an industry I don’t love, but have also been used by natives for these skin protection purposes centuries ago. Japan also happens to lead the world in elegant formulations that feel like there’s nothing on your skin. It took me from parched, paper dry skin to sometimes maybe a bit thirsty skin. My favorite product lines are iHADA, Vaselisa, and Biore.

  5. Honestly I use Vaseline on the backs of my hands a couple of times a day. Otherwise my skin cracks open.

  6. Hand creams from L’Occitane and Neal’s Yard are my go tos. Available pretty much everywhere in Japan.

  7. I really love Nivea SOFT for hands especially, because it doesn’t leave greasy or sticky residue most other drug store lotions often do.

    For feet, it’s always Johnson’s Aroma Milk, mostly because it comes in giant bottles so I don’t have to be precious with it in fear that it’ll run out. Putting it on just before socks and shoes if I expect to be out walking all day works wonders!…it’s also got a nice fragrance selection.

  8. Started using the Body Shop Almond Milk Body Yogurt and Hemp Hand Creme last winter and it’s been pretty good so far. Super weird to have oily skin and originally be from a hot/humid place and not need moisturizers until more than 10 years in Japan.

  9. Weleda Skin food is thick, but works for me. Also wearing cotton gloves overnight worked for me. I would occasionally throw them across the room during my sleep tho lol

  10. I get cheap lotion from my local grocery store for my body but only use lotion from Lush on my face. They have the lightest one I’ve ever found, helping my dry skin without making me breakout too much

  11. This is the one I have been using for all dry skin issues and it fixes the problem very fast. 100% natural.

    Betty’s aloe vera

  12. Hatomugi range of lotions available everywhere (one of Japan’s best secret skin care products, affordable and in huge bottles at donki), for hands.. the ones with Q10 (red tubes) handlotion.. Medicated ones if there are skin cracks/lesions. I swear by this as I used to be a dishwasher for my baito when I was a student. Detergent always dried my hands and caused wounds that are so painful. This kept my hands soft and rejuvenated all the time.

  13. A bit expensive but this is my defence against dry skin/eczema:

    Daily use: La Roche-posay at+m moisturizer

    Night time: Vaseline

    Both on Amazon Japan

    Humidifier with distilled water. (VOCs and PM2.5 go up in the room if using tap water)

    Otherwise worst case is the hassle of going to dr prescribe a steroid cream.

  14. I don’t know what to believe. Girls who are in to skin care all tell me different things (I’m a guy and have only ever used generic moisturisers). I have super dry skin and want to fix it a bit, and so I’m hearing:

    * Use only sunscreen.
    * Don’t use sunscreen are you mad?
    * Use alcohol-free stuff.
    * Definitely don’t use alcohol-free stuff.
    * Use a 化粧水 before anything else.
    * Use only a 乳液 and you’ll be OK.
    * Don’t use oily/creamy stuff like the Neutrogena because it only puts a film over your skin and nothing is absorbed.
    * Use the Neutrogena it saves me in winter (top post in this thread).

  15. No long showers or hot baths. At end of shower or bath, finish with lukewarm or neutral temperature.
