Examples of how to use 「毒を食らわば皿まで」？

I thought I could understand this kotowaza, but the more I think about it, the more I’m getting confused. Is it only used in a negative context? I’m not finding a lot of clear examples on when someone would use this phrase.

  3. I think a good example would be like Brenda in Scary Movie: “We already committed murder, we might get as well rob his ass”.
