    > YouTuber Fidias also walked into a hotel in Kyoto, tricked an employee into thinking he was a paying guest, and ate a “free” buffet meal.

    > Does it require “research” to understand this is unacceptable in Japan? In what country’s culture is this okay?

  2. >“I apologize to the Japanese people if we made them feel bad,” he said. “From now on I am going to be make [sic] more research to the cultures we go to and try to prevent this from happening again.”

Is this guy implying that there are cultures where sneaking on board trains, eating food without paying and begging for money from strangers are cultural norms? Imagine what it’s like having no shame like this.

  3. I think it’s a no-no in any country, not just Japan, but did no one make an issue of it until he came to Japan?

  4. Man I just don’t get why mfs come over here and lose all common sense. Idk if it’s the anime infatuation or what, but this is a real country with real people, not some isekai you can come to and disrespect.

You know damn well you wouldn’t do that in your country so why would you spend thousands of dollars coming to a foreign country and committing crimes and THEN being dumb enough to upload it online like shit sweet.

  5. I just googled the guy, and the top pictures that come up are him hugging Elon Musk. Suddenly I’m not surprised by his behavior.

  6. I dont understand how people like this are still allowed to have a passport and travel around. People like this should be deported and have their passports taken away.

  8. I’m of the opinion that over-tourism, which seems to worry a lot of people here, is a problem that’s going to solve itself within the decade. Before getting all upset, remember that this is just **an opinion**.

    * Many of today’s tourists are those who postponed their trip due to the pandemic, but this will come to an end.
    * The rise of plane tickets fare is here to stay, and will only get worse in the future.
    * The olympics have come and gone, and with the pandemic, their influlence on Japan’s attractiveness was near zero for obvious reasons.
    * Korea’s cultural influence in music, series and movies is is starting to pay dividends for their tourism sector, and while anecdotal evidence, I see an increasing number of people who want to visit Korea rather than Japan.
    * The Japanese tech sector has been losing steam for the past 2 decades at least, and it won’t get any better. The days of Japan as a “high tech” destination are long gone.
    * The country, to many people, just doesn´t feel as exotic and mysterious as it did 10 years ago, and that will start showing.
    * If the international situation ends up stabilizing, I believe that Taiwan will be the dark horse of East-Asian tourism, even possibly ahead of Korea. It’s basically what’s best about China concentrated on a tiny island, and without most of what’s worst about China.

Obviously, those impressions are very western-centered, and there many moving parts such as the Yen value, and how Chinese tourism (and to some extent of Asian countries) will evolve. I am also of the opinion that the heydays of Chinese tourism are gone as well. Wishful thinking maybe.

  9. A good thing about Japanese shops, hotels, etc, is that they assume customers are (mostly) honest, contrary to shops in Europe (where I live). I don’t have the impression of being monitored all the time there or to be viewed as a thief. I hope these fuckers won’t ruin it for other visitors by making local businesses wary of foreigners. I also hope Japan makes a law to ban from going there ever again.

  10. Japan really needs to crack down on all these assclowns. Let them spend 1 year in jail, then deport them.
