Do Youtubers have to pay taxes in Japan as a foreign student?

I am YouTuber or more like a hobby. I don’t earn any huge amount from YouTube. I earn like $100 per month. Sometimes I don’t even earn $100. So do I have to pay taxes? Although nobody knows my real identity in YouTube, so should I hide it?

  2. You’re asking if tax evasion is okay? Seriously?

If you are really only earning $100 per month then you will not owe tax, but you should still declare the income. As a student you also need work permission from immigration, and failure to get it could result in deportation.

Committing crimes (tax evasion) in general is a bad idea. Doing it in a foreign country is much worse. Do you really want to deal with an accusation of tax evasion in Japanese?

  3. Hey maybe you should go into a construction site without some permission. Worked out for that Black dude.

  4. If you make new videos which earn money while in Japan then legally yes you would have to declare it. It’s a different story in the income is passive from past work.

  5. As a non-permanent resident, granted the money makes it into a US bank account and stays there, you do not pay taxes on it. This is the only situation in which any resident does not pay taxes on a form of income. Permanent residents would still pay taxes on that income.

Note that if you use the money in Japan to pay for goods, or services, or withdraw it for usage, you’d declare it as remitted foreign income and you would need to pay taxes on it.

Not an accountant, so take with a grain of salt and do your own research! 🙂

  6. If you’re earning money, you declare it. Doesn’t matter if it’s $100 or $1. Income is income.

  7. If you’re receiving the money into your foreign bank account then I’d say you are good to go.

But as other mentioned, if you are doing this *while* in Japan, you’d have to pay taxes in *Japan*.

Unless no one will ever find out.

Btw. Watch out with streaming/yt vid about Japanese games/gameplay/anime. There was a story of a guy that got either fined or jailed (can’t remember) for making game walkthrough on yt.
