Hi all, we are travelling from Kurayoshi towards Himeji. We are also holders of a JR pass, and understand that only the part to Tottori is covered by the pass. As we would like to stay on that train, how and where could we buy the surcharge? At Kurayoshi station, or in the train? We do hope that we won‘t need to interrupt the jouney.
Here what we found in the internet:
„The Super Hakuto is run by both JR West and the private company Chizu Railway; therefore, holders of a Japan Rail Pass traveling on the Super Hokuto must pay a surcharge to Chizu Railway. For the whole journey between Kyoto and Kurayoshi, the surcharge is 1,750 yen for a non-reserved seat and 1,850 yen for a reserved seat.“

Go to the ticket office at Kurayoshi and present your pass, JR staff are usually very knowledgeable about pass limitations. Failing that, either point to the JR website / map describing the need for a supplement on this section, or have a Google translated message for something like “I would like to buy the Chizu Railways surcharge” and show it to them.
Ask the conductors once you get on. It’s not a big deal, don’t stress.
