Cousin wants to try Japan-style Mexican food, any suggestions?

This would be for Tokyo area.

The weirder the take on Mexican food the better!
Any suggestions?

(edit: looking mostly for weird or bad)

  1. What does that even mean? Like do you want to eat Mexican food in Japan or do you want to eat whatever Japanese people think Mexican food is? It’s not really a fusion scene for that cuisine yet.

There is a place run by this person named Sarasa in Tokyo that does high end Mexican with heirloom ingredients. Never been but the chef there is Mexican and studied at a very respected school in Mexico City. The pictures look like it’s similar to offerings presented by places like Xokol in Guadalajara and Pujol in CDMX

  2. I don’t think Mexican food has gotten popular enough in Japan to “ruin it” like they did with Italian food (Napolitan, mayo corn pizza). As far as I know, there are no takoyaki tacos with ikasumi tortillas for now.

  3. Rojo Bar in Koenji! The chef does his own take on many dishes and mostly uses Japanese ingredients, but he still remains respectful to the cuisine .

  4. Theres a place in Harajuku called Las Dos Caras that has some fusion stuff, its kind of overpriced but pretty tasty and they have espresso martinis

  5. What do you mean by Japanese style?

I’ve had a few places here that looked like Mexican food but tasted like Japanese food if you mean this

  6. Los Tacos Azules is the only place I’ve seen that would fit that definition and excel at it. Like many Japanese takes it leans towards a Mediterranean take, more seafood and Japanese root veggies. It’s delicious and fairly priced, highly recommend.

  7. Go to Taco Bell, there is one in Shiodome. Nothing more weird than fries with tacos. Quality is also not good so might be a good comparison for your cousin.

For a decent places, there is one in Hiroo and one in Daikanyama. Others can chime in here.

  8. Okonomiyaki Burrito.

Make Okonomiyaki, sauce it to proper Mexican spiciness, wrap it in a tortilla, and wha-la.

  9. More Tex-Mex but in Harajuku I actually enjoy Guzman y Gomez. If you want something weird (albeit more California weird than Japan weird) try the French Fry burrito. Little guac, little salsa… and potatoes….
