Phone Service Question

So I’m moving to Japan September 1st and trying to figure out phone stuff now.

I only plan on being in Japan for a year and I am on my Mom’s phone plan in the states (I give her money for it before anyone says anything), which she plans on keeping me on since I’ll only be gone for a year.

I am wondering how I should go about getting phone service in Japan.

I know a lot of people say to transfer your number to google voice and then get a phone plan in Japan, but wanted opinions on this.

I also know some people do pocket wifi or just a data plan instead of a voice and data plan.

Sorry if this is stupid to ask about, the phone stuff is a little confusing to me. I’ve only ever traveled abroad for short periods, where I just connected to wifi to use my phone and be able to contact family.

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

  1. If you’re staying on your mom’s plan, why do you need to transfer your number?
