What is this Jelly thing?

I bought microwavable Vegetables simmered in Dashi in Family Mart and this particular piece is delicious. Please let me know what this is. Thank you,

  1. Konjac (kon’nyaku). It’s a jelly made from devil’s tongue. I don’t like it.

  2. Konnyaku konjac jelly. It’s made from some weird poisonous root. When it’s refined, it become this weird substance.

  3. The thing about Konjac is that it doesn’t really have any flavor of it’s own– not a lot, anyhow– but will absorb almost any flavor it’s exposed to. So it’s probably absorbed the flavors of the dashi, the vegetables, and any other seasoning included in the dish. And with the right combination of veggies and stock, well, the resulting flavor can be a wonderful thing.

  4. It also has zero carbs. If you see the shirataki noodles (also in hotpots or oden), it’s made of the same thing (Konjac)

  5. Black konnyaku, which has some seaweed in it that gives it that color. There is also white konnyaku.

  6. There is a Japanese Iron Chef episode where this is the secret ingredient! Just watched it on YouTube the other day

  7. I use konyakku to make vegan fatty beef or vegan squid since it takes on flavor really well (like tofu). Chef George Lee has a great easy vegan fatty beef recipe!

  8. Can’t get past the smell when you open the package. Any way to get rid of the devil fart smell?

  9. I had to Google this interesting specimen so I could try it myself, I found it’s banned in Australia as it is know to be indigestible and expands in the stomach causing a blockage, and that it smells like dead fish, I’m turned off
