What does the plant-based food scene look like in Japan?

Hi! I’m a foodtech student looking to develop a plant based food product. I would like to know what the scene is like for you guys in Japan!

If you don’t mind, would you fill in the short survey below?

Thank you so much!

  1. You might want to state whether you consider plain tofu to be ‘plant based food products’. I haven’t had (nor even seen in person) any of the products listed, but I often eat tofu, which left me confused on how to answer some of the questions… so I just gave up.

  2. There may be a language translation issue here as many foods are already vegetarian/vegan. An example I just learned is that 80% of a native Okinawan’s caloric intake is derived from sweet potatoes and sugarcane grown there.

My main concern with the questionaire provided is why should a person who regularly cosumes a vegetarian diet seek a product that immitates another product that they do not currently consume. These “Plant Based” products are in its core an immitation; shaped and flavored in a manner that mimics.

Its like asking someone why they like a flavor of soda that is fruit based. The soda has 0% fruit. Are you drinking this soda for religous reasons? do you not have access to the fruit year round? Is the fruit cost too much to consume?

You are not targeting the consumer with these questions. Why do you enjoy this flavor and does this flavor meet your expectations and standards? If you do eat meats, would you be interested in plant based varieties that immitates the product?

  3. I write surveys for a living. Demos should be at the end. Income should be optional or have a prefer not to respond. And expect lots of respondents to not include the currency.

You need to define plant based products. “Please specify the plant based products you have encountered.” I “encountered” miso, tofu, mushrooms, kombu and green onions today because I made myself soup. That’s not on your list but they are all plant based. Revise to, “are you aware of any of the below products?”

I only looked at the first page. Good luck to you.

  4. My experience was that veganism was relatively well known and catered to in bigger cities like Tokyo or Osaka and if you travel outside those areas people can barely wrap their head around the concept.
