fat tire bicycle parking

So my old bike (gt aggressor) needs a viking funeral, and I am forced to pick up something new. It would seem the really fat tire bikes are hugely popular at the moment, like 80% of all mountain bike searches.

Where would one even park one of those in town (lets say Shibuya), since everywhere uses the fork style park where you insert your front tire. The GT’s tires barely as it is.

If you have a fat tire bike, you always park illegally, or.. never park in town? Just curious. It is pretty hard to find a place near work as it is for 8 hour parking 🙂

  1. I wouldn’t let people talk you out of fixing your old bike, you just need to find the right shop.

If your bike doesn’t have a stand I wouldn’t use those wheel wedge stands, it’s not good to lean the bike on the spokes.

I have a road bike with no stand and tyres too skinny to get wedged in those. I just cable lock it to something, there’s usually some pole shaped thing to secure it to.

  2. You will find very few bicycle parking lots that fit fat tire bikes. Only the turnstile type entry ones. These are usually more expensive and also sometimes accept scooters/motorbikes.

I have a fat tire bike, and while it is fun to ride, it sucks for commuting because parking is difficult.

I’d repair the GT if you can.

  3. Are you riding the trails a lot? I don’t see why a fat tire MTB would make sense in the city.

  4. I ride MTB, for parking there is usually an area in the parking spaces where you can put your bike.

I usually see a fat tire bike or two also parked up, just ask in the parking garage.

  5. Some bicycle parking lots have a designated mamachari areas, these are the lots with flappy gates at the entrance, where you have to take a ticket coming in, pay in a separate machine and stick the ticket in the slot when leaving.

These are not as common as rim clincher kind.

Basically, bike should be suited to the environment you use it in, parking lots included just as much as gearing or lights.
