Rejecting English Teaching Job for Eikaiwa After Signing Contract and Sending Documents

Hi everyone! I am wondering if anyone has rejected/reneged on an English teaching job before. I am currently living in the U.S. and in the interview process for some corporate jobs in the U.S. (my degree is in business) but have always wanted to live in Japan, which led me to apply to this English teaching job. I have received the offer for the teaching position but unfortunately have to sign the contract for the position in the next two weeks before I can hear back from other job offers (they won’t extend the deadline). What would happen if I signed the contract and sent my documents for the visa but later rejected the teaching job before going to Japan? Are there any financial penalties? I am fine with being blacklisted from this specific eikaiwa, I would just like to know the consequences. Thank you!

  1. They can not give you the money you won’t earn by not working for them. That’s about it.

  2. Many people renege after they sign the contract. Sometimes they find a better job, sometimes they have a health/family emergency or sometimes they simply get cold feet.

No problem if you renege, these companies are used to it

  3. People back out of these jobs all the time, which is why recruiters always hire far more people than they need, and then wait list them.

Besides, it’s not as if this is a job where you’re expected to follow professional norms. Think of it as quitting a job with McDonald’s by not showing up for your shift and then not answering your phone.

  4. Trust me this won’t be the first or last time someone decides not to go through with an Eikaiwa job.

They might make a fuss and try to guilt you in an email, but they’ll find another person very quickly. The only ‘penalty’ they can give is maybe blacklisting you from applying again in the future, but they can’t impose any financial penalty or stop you from applying somewhere else in Japan either so don’t worry about it.
