Coal mining is a horrid job and has no future in a warming world. That being said, I’m not completely deaf to arguments of at least keeping the skills active in the country, especially as many might cross transfer to other areas. If Japan just switches to importing then it doesn’t change anything anyway, the mines it comes from would likely be much more dangerous and possibly more polluting than ones in Japan.
The only real argument is to close down coal power plants too.
