For the past decade, Tokyo’s youth had flocked to Shibuya’s streets to drink, party and gawk at costumed zombies, Marios and Pikachus.
But Shibuya no longer wants any part of it: This year, it’s spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on an information campaign aimed at dissuading people from coming at all.
I’m not so sure…from what I hear city planners liked the idea at first because of the business that it would supposedly bring but ultimately it didn’t work out that way.
All that ended up happening was that the streets got trashed and the police overloaded with minor incidents and crimes.
Apparently it’s not worth the headache.
Still it would be cool if there was a designated Halloween festival in Tokyo!
“A Tokyo neighborhood”… Do you mean “SHIBUYA”?? That’s a huge well known place, and not really a “neighborhood” in the typical way.
Going to Shibuya for Halloween was already the thing to do in 2005 when I was studying abroad, it’s definitely been around since before 2011.
it’s weird for an american media outlet to be making this claim. like, right or wrong it’s literally none of our business what shibuya does on halloween.

That is a mistake.
