7-11 food quality going down

Is it just me or is the food quality going down?

I’m in Japan for several years now, I usually buy the same favorite products, but I’m noticing steep decline in quality, especially bread section or even more expensive stuff like 塩焼き鯖.

I was recently surprised how much better the bakery stuff from Lawson was 🙂

  1. I think it’s become much worse value since the shrinkflation and inflation started. Last year I could get breakfast and lunch there for about 1000 yen, now the same stuff seems more like 1400 yen and the portions are smaller. There’s more rice, less meat, and so on. Seems to be most places not just 7.

On the upside, I’m doing way more cooking these days and so I’m a bit healthier and spending less on bento. Also there is less annoying plastics and disposable shit in my house. I’ll go to 7 or Family Mart once a week and always underwhelmed by the food these days.

I go to MyBasket, or other discount supermarkets. They’re still alright value and no frills so you get more meat and so on.

  2. Feels like the food quality has been going down while prices have gone up is most places. Noticed this during my last visit. Lot of places cheaping out on ingredients is my best guess.

  3. I think it has gone down a little, but also Lawson has been stepping up their food quality as well. I think they are now on par with each other, but Lawson has the better coffee.

  4. yeah for sure, especially their sandwiches. the “bread” just tastes like a weird foamy sponge. no texture or flavor anymore. Lawson also has decent shokupan btw! not the best, but definitely edible.

  5. Kombini-food starting to show its true ugly face. I reckon that the price of “MSG” has gone up, so they use less of it?

IMHO, it’d be tastier and healthier to prepare your own bentos. And you get to decide the quality (and price) of the ingredients. You can still add MSG, if you’re not a great cook and still want to make your food tasy.

  6. I also like(d) their 塩焼きさば and I noticed the plastic wrap cover had changed somewhat so I’m guessing they switched to a different vendor. sigh

  7. I mean they had the cockroaches in the onigiri quality control problem just a few months ago so I wouldn’t doubt it.

  8. I’m sorry but eating fresh fish from a conbini, regardless of what country you’re in, is fucked.

  9. Yeah man, compared to 3-4 years ago? It has become way worse. Much less variety. Now it’s like, how many variations of red or white sauce on rice can we make?

  10. I stopped buying ready-to-go food from 7-11 a few years ago. None of them tastes the same as they did when I was a kid.

  11. You must be joking. I’m working in a 7/11, I NEVER even find anything worth buying in a Lawson. There is a reason why Lawson combinis are all shutting down everywhere. They’re compltely outdated on the service level too. And about the bread in particular, I mean, I am French, from the danishes to the sandwitches, 7/11’s bread quality isn’t only far superior, it has never ceased to ameliorate, and it’s only normal because it’s a [bakery](http://www.gbinc.co.jp/) that makes their bread.

  12. I’m just thankful the quality and variety still is 1000 times better than the 7-11’s in Canada 😂

  13. no, its not going down. You are just use to the novelty and taste of it. OF course it was amazing when you first tried it, but when you get use to the taste the novelty wears off.
