Visa renewal and request for research documents

Anybody has been to the Immigration Center lately? Is it recommended to go in the afternoon rather than in the morning?

Also, I went to renew my student visa for the remaining time I have to complete my Master’s but I was requested to bring *additional* documents that demonstrate a research period I had (still under my current standard student visa) before turning into a regular graduate student, due to some MEXT regulations. Any recommendations on what’s best to bring so I avoid long and endless explanations? What is curious is that a colleague who did the same process wasn’t asked to bring anything and we are actually asked to go to different desks in the Immigration office.

  1. You need to go to your university office and ask for Research Student Activities Certificate (研究生活動証明書) or something along this line. This is required as you need proof that you were student during the entirely of your current student visa. Since your master degree’s certificate would only cover your activities from when you entered master course, you need the another certificate from when you were a research student.
