Western and Eastern classical studies are typically two separate departments.
Chinese kanji (which is where Japanese came from) goes back just as far as Western linguistic history if not farther. I imagine it’s a lot of reading old Japanese texts. Which are almost fully written in kanji, many of which aren’t every day Japanese anymore.
