What languages does the average Classics major learn in Japan?

Would it be ancient Greek and Latin or ancient versions of east Asian languages?

  1. Chinese kanji (which is where Japanese came from) goes back just as far as Western linguistic history if not farther. I imagine it’s a lot of reading old Japanese texts. Which are almost fully written in kanji, many of which aren’t every day Japanese anymore.
