A recommendation for Kyoto, the Hozugawa boat trip is up and running again. We did an early start and got the train out of Kyoto to the mountains and got the 09:00 boat. This takes you down the mountain on the river through some gorgeous scenery and drops you off right at Arishiyama (we were there for 11:00). Worth checking out if it sounds like your thing.
