I Missed a Japanese Lesson

Hello everyone,

I am a JET Short List candidate from Canada and I failed to notify the JET desk that I would be absent. I had a work-related endeavour and I honestly thought that I had sent out my email saying I would be unable to attend, but for some reason, the email was saved as draft and therefore did not send. I sent out an email explaining the situation when I realised my mistake (a few minutes before the class ended.

I guess my question is do you think there could be serious repercussions or will I just get a slap on the wrist? I feel terrible

  1. I’m a former JET. Can you explain this Japanese lesson? What is that? Is this something you have to do before departure?

  2. Is it mandatory? It wasn’t mandatory when I departed. I missed a few lessons (3–all to due negligence on my part/being forgetful) and all that happened was a generic email saying “hey, you missed this lesson”. It wasn’t like a “ you’re in trouble” email but just a reminder that I missed it. These were group lessons on zoom as well.

Anyways, nothing came of it in my case. I still departed and I’m still here 2 years later lol. I think you’re fine, but if you’re really worried, you can send an email apologizing.

  3. Pretty sure the lessons are optional like not everyone can make it. You won’t be reprimanded just worry about work and preparing for departure. Good luck ✨

  4. It’s fine. I missed 2 classes (once because of work and once because I simply lost track of time) and almost missed a 3rd because I was overseas haha. Absolutely nothing will happen. I apologized to the teacher and that was that. Those classes are purely optional.

Relax! At this point, you’ve been shortlisted and gotten your placements. They WANT you to go to Japan and are actively working on getting you there. Unless you, I dunno, go on a murder spree, they’re not going to kick you out of the program for making small mistakes.

  5. Japanese lessons? I’d love to do those, but I haven’t heard anything about them from the Chicago consulate at least.
