Is 6000円 a lot for a haircut?

I’m a man who usually uses this chain called The Barber GM. They’re like a posh version of QB house but I mainly like them because you can book an appointment online and also they keep a record of your previous cuts on your webpage to show you as reference. Just a really nice cut.

They’ve recently put their prices up to 6000 a cut and as I only go every few months I don’t even know is that still a fair price or is this a lot?

I’ve tried QB house so many times but they do a shit job EVERY time so I gave up. I only get a short back and sides but somehow they can’t do it. I’m probably too fussy and/or unlucky.

  1. Unless you are aiming for a final fantasy character hairstyle, that sounds way too much. I pay 2000 per cut once every 6 weeks or so.

  2. Got my haircut for [1600yen,](https://www.plage-bb.co.jp/service/riyou.html) include shaving and shampoo until last year before they charge extra for shampoo. Now, I forgo shampoo because extra 300yen is expensive. But that’s me.

    Edit: reply

I still get my hair blow dry, shoulder brush with little broom and offered hot towel to wipe off my face and neck. But hey … I get to leave 10mins earlier and 300yennies for a cuppa.

  3. I pay about 3000 for the convenience of walking in, asking for いつも通り and trying not to fall asleep for the next 45 minutes

  4. It’s on the higher side for just a cut, but a barber that can give you a consistent haircut in your usual style has a lot of value to me, personally. I use a really nice non-chain place near me, takes about an hour and I get a cut, wash, blow dry, head/temple/shoulder massage, and it costs me 5000. I use the same barber each time so they don’t even need to ask anymore and they always nail my cut.

QB House are kinda the opposite end of the spectrum, I used to go there for a buzz cut when I was in Uni for like 1000 yen. Hit up hot pepper and take advantage of first timer coupons to try out the places around you and find somewhere that fits in your budget.

  5. This wouldn’t be that expensive for a hair salon, even for men, but for a barber that sounds on the higher end.

  6. Last time I paid 22000 yen for cut/colour/treatment + shoulders massage and cup of coffee. My hair lengths is a little bit below shoulders.

  7. 6,000 is a bit much. I go to a Brazilian place and pay 3,000 plus tip (I normally hate tip culture but this place deserves it). Nothing better than a clean bald fade and line up.

  8. I got mine for free, my gf learned how to do it once covid started and since then she has improved a lot and anyway I just want a normal haircut, nothing too fancy hahaha

Edit. I was lookimg near my area, in Shiga and men haircut is around 1600, found one at 950 too… But I don’t think japanese now how to do western cuts

  9. I am on the lazy and cheap spectrum, but I just bought a hair cutting machine that I can use to both trim my beard and cut my hair. That was 10 years ago after 20+ of going to the barber every 3 months or so.

It depends on how much fashionable you want to look, but I would look into doing it yourself if you worry about money. It is also very little time consuming since in Japan you have those shower units that are completely plasticized and you can just leave everything full of hair and then shower it down, put all the hair into a trash bag and done!

  10. At the qb house yes. At a proper salon with 2 hair washes, shoulder and head massage with a 30 minute men’s cut sounds reasonable.

  11. In Japan, hair stylist and barber are two different occupations with different schools, different training regimens, different cutting approaches, different everything.

For instance, prospective hair stylists have to intern at a hair salon for several years before they’re even allowed to go to the trade school to earn their license. Or, in another example, barber shops wash your hair face down in the sink while hair salons do it face up.

6,000 yen for a haircut is the classy big city hair salon rate. Rural/small city salons are more like 3,000 or 4,000.

Barbershops tend to be cheaper, ranging from 1,000 and change to 3,000 or so.

But a very good barber can give you a cut just as good as a high end hair salon. You just have to shop around to find them.

  12. Price raised from what to 6000? If you went from 5000 to 6000, but it’s a cut you like, think about where you might save 1000 yen every two months. One less pint once every two months? Eat in once a month instead of going out?

Personally I’d stay with the place I like and adjust elsewhere. Less hassle in the end.

  13. I would just go on hotpepperbeauty and find cheap good options near you. They offer discounted haircuts/services and is a really good way of finding good but cheap haircuts near you. I usually pay around 2,000 – 2,500 yen for a decent haircut at a beauty salon.

  14. I go to local barber, about 3700 yen. Haircut, shave, that car thing they drive on your scalp, some shoulder punching, and usually enya playing. it’s perfect.

  15. I paid 8000円 every 2 months for cut + perm. So if it’s just for a haircut it’s kinda expensive.

Does this place brand themselves as english/foreigner-friendly barber? If yes, that explains the price.

Anyway if you can speak Japanese, there are many other options for good stylists with cheaper price.

  16. 6000 is kind of on the pricier side for a barber cut. My cuts are usually 3000-5000. I’ve never found anywhere cheaper that could actually cut my non-Asian hair properly, and even in this price range there’s no guarantee. Cheaper has universally been a disaster though, I stopped looking for cheap cuts within my first couple years here.

  17. You mean hairstyle or barber service ?
    For hairstyle may not
For barber I got my hair cut in **IWASAKI** with 690円(税込)

  18. 1100 where i go…then again i only need to shave the sides. I almost always cringe when i see 4000+ for a cut since where I came from a haircut is around 400¥ tops

  19. Many barbers here in Kyoto that aren’t chains run 3-4k. 6 is more than I’d pay, but if you like the place it’s not unjustifiable.

  20. It’s like 100 yen a day to look awesome, or below 50 yen a day to look just ok.

You decide whether it’s worth it.

Personally, I think it’s worth the extra money, but many commenters would disagree.

  21. that sounds pretty crazy for a men’s haircut. I pay 8000 yen for my haircut every 4 months, and that’s because it’s a specialized curly cut that I definitely couldn’t get at a normal salon.

  22. if your salary is 10 millions it is not much.
if your salary is 2.4 millions it is a bit much.

  23. OP I think you asked the wrong place because as you already see, there are a bunch of people who just get the “fuck me up special” or “salaryman #3” or “buzz me because I’m already halfway balding” cuts at the local chain barber shop.

I think for a proper salon or actual barber, 4000 low end 6000 high end is fine. Service is great and personalized, and as you said, they are way more detailed focused on cuts. The tools and techniques they use all tend to be newer and better quality as well. I pay 4000 at mine, and as you mentioned in your post, they both remember exactly what I got last time, in addition to having pics and memo notes. At a chain cut shop, even if you show pics, it’s a gamble every time.

I also view the salon as relaxation and an experience. The salon cuts usually take me an hour or hour fifteen while a chain cut will be thirty mins tops. At the salon, I get a cup of coffee, a nice massage, very indepth shampoo and conditioner wash and head massage, etc.

While I love the salon, I can’t lie, 4000yen every cut starts to add up. To combat this, what I do is I’ll get a salon cut for the shape and the more difficult parts, then after 4-6 weeks when it starts to grow out a bit, I’ll go to a cheaper chain shop and tell them not to touch anything off top, just trim the sides and back. Then 4-6 weeks later I go back to salon and repeat.

    So over half a year

    instead of 4000 4000 4000 4000 4000 4000= 24,000

    it’s 4000 1500 4000 1500 4000 1500 = 16,500
