Credit card payment issue after using a car rental overseas (deposit not returned/released)

Hi all. I’m stuck with a stupid credit card issue that I can’t resolve.
Long story short, I have two charges from a US rental car company on my statement even though the first one (a hold/deposit) was supposed to be released and not charged after returning the car. The rental car company confirms that they released the hold on August 12 when I returned the car, but I still don’t have any indication of that on my card statement. I called my card company and they have confirmed that yes there are two charges made, and they haven’t received any request to cancel/release the hold on the first one.

Each place is telling me to contact the other at this point saying their hands are tied, and I’m stuck. Is it possible that cancelling the first one and having it show up is just taking a really long time?? At this point though it has been over 2 months with nothing show up.
Anyone else have experience with this?

Followup question – I’ve heard that it is difficult to do a chargeback on a Japanese CC. Is that an option I have if the money is not returned…?

  1. If you’re going to formally dispute the transaction and have it charged back (which you can do) do it ASAP.

2 months is well beyond how long it should take for this to have processed, BUT most Japanese CC providers have a **max 90-day window** for disputing charges, that starts ticking from *the date of the charge* NOT the date of lodging a dispute.

So email the car rental company back again to notify them in writing that you’ll be initiating a formal chargeback process with your credit card company to resolve the issue.

Then immediately call you CC company and start that chargeback process. They’ll likely want you to forward evidence to them in the form of copies of email communications with the rental that shows the company have acknowledged you should have gotten this money back.

    Good luck.

  2. I plan on renting a car using a jpn CC towards the end of December and seeing this kind of scares me. I think I’ll have my wife use hers as I just got mine and don’t have too high a limit. I hope someone else shares their experience, since this worries me too.
