Questions about the Hakone Day Pass

Upon doing some research, the options I’m seeing online is to buy the Odakyu romance car for an additional 1250 yen, which is a fee on top of the hakone free pass. My question is if there’s a was a way to get back to Tokyo (maybe Sumida area or Shinjuku) without having to pay extra for the romancecar option and is already FREE of charge included in the hakone free pass. Other alternatives that would be cheaper can work as well, unless romancecar is the best option, please let me know. Thanks 🙂

  1. Yes, the normal train on Odakyu line. You can use JapanTravel by navitime and in the filter remove limited express. You might have to change train but it will bring you to Shinjuku.

  2. Absolutely. The only difference about the romance car, besides being more expensive, is that it is acceptable to eat and drink on there, and it gets you to Hakone/Shinjuku maybe 10 or 15 minutes faster.

If you want to save money or can’t reserve the romance car, just take a regular Odakyu line train since it is already covered with the pass. From Hakone Yumoto take an express train to Shinjuku, or you might have to take the train to Odawara first, then transfer to an express train to Shinjuku. There are local lines as well, but they will take you much longer since they stop at every station.

Just use Google maps when you arrive at Hakone Yumoto to see the best times and route. Remember with the pass, it has to be Odakyu railways. In Odawara there is JR as well but the pass won’t work

  3. We didn’t use romance car either way to and from Tokyo. Depending on your hotel in Tokyo, you’ll have to add extra time to get to Shinjuku and double the price with the Romance Car.

We used googles maps for the local trains (limited express/local). Tweak the departure time, it’ll show you multiple ways to get to and from Hakone, choose “less transfer” and we didn’t even have to change the train. JR Tokaido line (not shinkansen) goes from Hakone directly to Minato city.

We bought the Hakone pass at their office at Odawara station, so we didn’t pay for the extra charge if you buy from Shinjuku.

  4. A regular express train (the one with the red destination sign) from Shinjuku will get you to Odawara. It’s ¥800 (one way) for adults and ¥50 for children. It’ll take less than two hours from Shinjuku. It is possible you will have to change to another station at Sagami-Ono Station.
