Using a Kobo e-reader in Japan with North American Overdrive/Libby

Hi everyone,

I am an American currently living in Japan for work, and I’ve been thinking about getting a Kobo Libra 2 e-reader for its library lending service Overdrive/Libby for use with US libraries (I know it works in Japan, but for Japanese libraries).

Has anyone done with this a Japanese Kobo? It would be easy to get one here (Rakuten owns the company), but I’m not sure whether I can use a US Kobo service Iike Overdrive here. I’m trying to figure out if I should have a KL2 shipped from the States, as I want to be able to access the Overdrive/Libby system in America. Does the origin of purchase (Japan vs US) matter, or is it more about where the device is set up?

And, has anyone used a VPN to set up a Japanese Kobo with an American address, if that is the case? I am planning to return to the States within a year or two, so I don’t want to lock myself out of the Overdrive system.

Much appreciated!

  1. My girlfriend did this and it was a huge fucking pain in the ass. She had to set up a separate american rakuten account using a VPN and set up the kobo using that, triple check for software updates, and wrestle with setting up overdrive still using a vpn. But it was possible.

  2. I use a kindle for this (bought and used in Japan). I have it registered to my American Amazon account to have the library ebooks sent to my device. I don’t need to use a VPN for anything.
