Student living in Japan, and on my way to school today the RA at my university dorm sent a text saying that cameras have been installed since two weeks ago? There were no emails or official information on this. I responded back, and RA told me I needed to talk to building a manger if I want details since they do not seem to have anything official as of now. Feel a little blind sited by all this as it revolves around privacy and not being notified to any extent. Is this legal? I have lived in other university housing before and usually there is usually some sort of notification. Prior to this there where no camera or talk of them being installed.
EDIT: I know cameras are legal in common spaces, I am more concerned about the way it was done in.

yeah, it’s legal so long as it’s a common area. my nagoya uni dorm lounge/kitchen had cameras.
> Is this legal?
Is it in the public area? Then yes.
If it’s in your room then no.
The cameras aren’t in your rooms?
yeah it’s legal.
It doesn’t really matter how they went about it because they don’t need the tenants permission or give anyone advanced notice to install cameras in public areas because the building owner gave them permission to install them
Using their instead of there I personally think should be illegal.
It’s time to lawyer up
Are you worried about this for general safety, or are worried because you been doing not allowed things. Your questioning the legality of something, are you the reason they had to install cameras.
Edits: don’t know proper English anymore
Can I ask where have you been before Japan? Cause it’s pretty normal honestly.
My dorm had it too, one in elevator hall and one at each end of the hall, so yeah if you live at the end of the hall they can see who going in and out. But then nobody really look at CCTV that much, the footage is looked at later when something happens.
Cameras were definately not checked at all at my coed dorm cause some of us (both genders) gathered to drink all the time in our first year. We only got caught cause we were drunk and loud, and definately not cause they saw us on the camera.
My previous work place definately has a ton of it, but 担当 person says she never looked at it since nothing ever happens that needs footage.
